Tips to Improve Your Video Marketing

Due to the impact of COVID-19 we have seen an influx of businesses taking advantage of the benefits of video marketing! Whether you are recording at-home ads or freshening up your website with some new video content, we wanted to take a moment and remind you of some crucial video tips that may be easy to forget!

Turn Your Phone Sideways

Now, if you are creating a Facebook or Instagram live, recording vertically totally makes sense, but if you’d like your video to appear more professional remember to turn your phone or camera to a horizontal position. By doing so, your social media video ads won’t have those unappealing black bars on the side. The horizontal format is alway superior to vertical when attempting to promote products or give viewers a glimpse into your business’ day-to-day.

Keep Your Camera at Eye Level

How you position your camera is a super important video element to keep in mind. You’ll want to avoid weird or unflattering angles and be mindful of head room. Head room is the space between the top of the subject’s head and the top of the screen frame, you’ll want to play around so there isn’t too much space as well as too little. If you are standing up while recording, you may want to consider using a tripod or a tall table to keep your camera steady and propped up. By keeping the camera at eye level, you allow your audience to feel like you are talking directly to them.

Make Use of Proper Lighting

Lighting matters. You'll want to record your video by a window or in well-lit room. When you are facing a window, the video will be bright and appealing. If you have the window behind you, you will be backlit. Backlighting is when you are recording with the source of light behind you. This causes overexposure to the background and the subject appears darker and shadow-like. Proper lighting will make your video stand out and gain more engagement on social media.

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare!

We know it may seem daunting having to record marketing videos but preparation is key! Avoid reading directly from a script while recording, your audience will have a hard time connecting with you if they see you reading from your notes. Take a few minutes to practice with a coworker or friend to avoid this. Remember that it’s okay if you’re not following exactly what you wrote down! Your audience wants to see your personality, so if you have a good grasp on what you need to discuss, press record and go for it! Lastly, always remember to have a clean background, a plain or professional shirt and shake off those nerves before hitting record.
